This is a thrilling challenge for someone willing to take charge and be accountable for data risk management in a dynamic and growing space. You’ll be instrumental in how we control and manage data risks within our marketing and digital domains, so our teams can safely operate, be effective, and adhere to regulatory and governance requirements.

Why this Role Matters-Bristol Best Risk and Control Job 2025
At Aviva, we’re leveraging data to make smarter decisions — from crafting customer journeys to maximizing our marketing efforts and digital experience. But with great power comes great responsibility. That’s where you come in.
As our Data Risk and Controls Manager, you will have responsibility for making sure that our teams grasp, recognize, and oversee the data risks in how we store, use, and gather customer and marketing data. You’ll be a go-to advisor to business stakeholders, advising them on best practice risk while supporting them to deliver safely and effectively.
You’ll help shape the way Aviva approaches data governance, risk management, and privacy compliance, influencing decisions that directly impact millions of customers. This is a role where your analytical thinking, control expertise, and communication skills will truly make a difference.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Data Risk and Controls Manager, you’ll have a varied and dynamic workload, combining strategic oversight with hands-on responsibility. You’ll work closely with business leaders, risk teams, data specialists, and marketers to ensure our controls remain robust, relevant, and efficient.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Managing and Evolving Data Controls
Develop, maintain, and continuously improve data risk and control frameworks within the marketing and customer data environment.
Ensure all controls are still fit for purpose, effective, and in line with Aviva’s wider risk management standards.
Perform control reviews, note gaps or weaknesses, and collaborate with teams to develop and implement pragmatic improvements.
Establish and hold risk and control registers up to date, monitored, and reported accurately.
Advising and Supporting Stakeholders
Provide risk and control guidance and expertise to data, marketing, and digital teams to enable them to manage data responsibly and in compliance.
Work with other Group Risk, Legal, and Compliance colleagues to ensure that local practices are compatible with enterprise-level frameworks.
Enable the delivery of data-related projects with identification of main risks early and the application of relevant mitigations.
Be a main point of contact for all data risk and control issues throughout the C&M function.
Enabling Governance and Transparency
Prepare thoughtful reports and dashboards to monitor risk and control performance, trends, and remediation activity.
Apply data visualization software like Qlik to display complicated information in a clear and effective way to senior stakeholders.
Assist risk and compliance examinations, audits, and regulatory reviews by offering accurate documentation and evidence.
Encourage an environment of accountability and openness, making teams aware of their responsibility in data risk management.
Continuous Improvement and Collaboration
Look to streamline, automate, and standardize risk management practices.
Keep pace with new data risks and changing regulatory expectations, responding by modifying controls and frameworks.
Lead the adoption of Aviva’s risk management tools, e.g., IBM OpenPages (iCARE), to ensure proper and timely documentation of all risks and control activities.
Partner with colleagues in the Customer Data Office to embed consistent governance practices across the organization.
